Protection from Mosquitoes and Other Insects
Clothing
Choose bright clothing. Wear long sleeves and long trousers. Spray any clothing with insect repellent containing permetrin.
Insect Repellent
Spray, roll-on or stick is important to cover skin areas not protected by clothing e.g., hands, feet, face and neck. However, avoid the hands and areas near the eyes and mouth on very young children.
Sweating and bathing make it necessary to apply / spray the agent several times per day (see the manufacturer’s instructions)
Adults and children, as a rule, have very good protection for several hours with a medication containing a DEET concentration of about 20%.
A knock-down spray against mosquito can be used in the residence during the evening and before going to bed.

Impregnated Mosquito Net
placed over the bed offers a great deal of protection against malaria and other insect-borne diseases and it is a good supplement to other malaria prophylaxis. Of course, the net must be intact and set up in as airy as possible in order to avoid skin contact. Stuff it in under the mattress so that insects do not make their way in between the net and mattress.
Do not wash the net, as this diminishes the effect of the impregnated agent. Furthermore, the agent can get into the water cycle and risk affecting the environment. However, the impregnating agent is harmless to mammals and thus to humans.
The effect of the agent often lasts for up to a year of net usage. It last longer in the package (see the manufacturer’s instructions).
Products are available for re-impregnating the net; however maybe not in your home country. When you are abroad, you can try to obtain Peripel 55 (Permetrin) or K-Othrine 25 (Deltametrin).
If you are not going to use the net again, it can be discarded at a waste station as environmentally hazardous waste or be burned.
