Earthquakes
Earthquakes are due to the drifting of the continental plates.
Small earthquakes also occur in several countries in Europe, up to several times a day, but they are so small that we do not notice them.
Powerful earthquakes are fortunately rare, but they occur above all around the Pacific Ocean from Japan to South America. The entire Eurasian continental plate’s southern boundary is also an active area, which means that Turkey, Greece and the Mediterranean Sea can also suffer both earthquakes and tsunamis.
Very Important
Make sure to find a safe place where as few objects as possible can fall down over you.
If you are indoors
If you can simply and easily get out of the hotel to an open location, do so - but do not take the lift!
Stay close to an interior wall, under a doorway or under a sturdy table.
Keep away from balconies, windows and stairways.
If you are outdoors
If possible, try to find a place where you are protected from falling objects.
Avoid bridges, buildings and trees.
Avoid the shoreline, since after an earthquake you may be at risk for flood waves, so-called tsunamis. Shortly before a tsunami strikes in over a shoreline, the water retreats significantly. Leave the shoreline immediately and head as quickly as possible to higher ground.
Some countries have implemented warning systems for tsunamis. Take these warnings seriously and immediately follow the instructions given.
